On Friday the 10th of July, the port community of Zeebrugge welcomed HM Ambassador Martin Shearman, the ambassador of the United Kingdom to Belgium, to the port for the general assembly of RX/Seaport.

The United Kingdom is an important trading partner of the Port of Zeebrugge. Thus, keeping our good ties with the U.K. is crucial for the port, also after the Brexit.

Currently, the U.K. and the European Union are negotiating to reach a trade agreement by the end of this year. The outcomes of these negotiations, however, are still unsure. For this reason, the port community of Zeebrugge is gearing up in its preparations for the Brexit. We are re-evaluating the solutions that were ready in response to previous Brexit deadlines, and adapt them to new challenges. Moreover, the port authorities are communicating with the port-clients to find solutions to Brexit-related challenges. RX/Seaport, the digital platform that speeds up custom-formalities, is ready to facilitate trade with the U.K. It also features a greenlight check, that can guarantee the smooth passage of vehicles in and through the port.

HM Ambassador Martin Shearman (ambassador of the U.K. to Belgium):

“Trade between the UK and Belgium is important to both countries. We want the relationship to flourish after the end of the transition period and I’m pleased to have the opportunity to discuss some of the related practical issues with the Port of Zeebrugge and its industries today.”

Marc Adriansens (chairman of RX/Seaport & chairman of APZI/VOKA):

“We are proud that the platform of RX/Seaport is ready so that we can digitalise the documents for the traffic to the U.K. This adds to making Zeebrugge Brexit-proof. This project also fits into our overall mission to make the Port of Zeebrugge a smart port.”

Rik Goetinck (CEO a.i. Port of Zeebrugge):

“Whatever the future may bring, we are certain that we will retain our good relationship with the U.K. The U.K. is a very important trade partner for the Port of Zeebrugge, and we aim to keep it this way. In the coming months, we will further make the Port of Zeebrugge Brexit proof!”
